A man was surprised to find a 17ft deep well full of water in the kitchen of his 18th century home while he was doing DIY – and has decided to keep the unique feature as a display.
Kevin Mort was installing underfloor heating with when he made the discovery at his home in Audlem, Cheshire.
The 48-year-old has decided to keep the 300-year-old well as an ‘aesthetic piece’ on display which was discovered underneath the kitchen floor.
A month ago, the family made the ‘amazing’ find when they were renovating their kitchen.
His daughter Ellie, 26, said on TikTok: ‘A little over a month ago we came across something absolutely amazing underneath our kitchen floor.

‘Little did we know we’ve been walking over a 300-year-old water well every day for the past 20 years.’
The family found it while ripping out the original flooring to install underfloor heating.
While removing some of the sand they came across a ‘really strange’ gravel mixture which turned out to be hollow and full of water. They suspected a leak and carried on digging ‘which lead to more water’.
After finding a brick wall they continued to probe further and made the amazing discovery.

The family have done TikTok videos to answer questions about the well
A pane of reinforced safety glass has been put over the top of the well so the family can enjoy the original feature as an ‘art display’.
Ellie’s grandparents were not aware of the wells existence prior to the discovery and neither were the previous owners.
He told the Sun: ‘As soon as we knew what it was I knew we couldn’t fill it in, I needed to get to the bottom. It just kept going and going, we had no idea how deep it was going to go.’
His wife Kristina added that they hoped the ‘well will be there for generations to enjoy’.
